Tumultuous Thursday

Wednesday was a horribly busy day here, most of it spent out of the house at various doctor appointments. I dislike those days. I didn’t even attempt to do the laundry because I didn’t have a chunk of time at home to even make sure a load was completed.

For those of you who don’t know I am a big fan of the follow it though method of laundry. I won’t start a load unless I know I can complete all the stages: wash, dry, fold and put away. That way I never wind up with a mountain of clean clothes sitting somewhere. That to me is an invitation to quickly become a pile of dirty laundry.

So Thursday will be a great day to try and get caught up. We are expecting the rements of Tropical Storm Nicole to hit. It looks like a lot of rain and wind with some possible flash flooding in certain areas will be hitting here tomorrow morning and through the afternoon. So I will have time to catch up on the laundry and figure out my main level organizational plan and maybe, just maybe try to get a start on it.

The upstairs is looking good. I am enforcing an evening room clean up after dinner so the children’s rooms are staying neat. The master bedroom is no longer a dumping ground. I have assigned each child a day to wipe down the bathrooms so the never get to the point of gross. I am pleased that the upstairs is functioning wonderfully.

Now I need to transfer that concept to the main floor. My nemesis remains the buffet. As much as I promise myself that I won’t let it get out of hand, within two months it is back to overflowing with papers to be filed, junk mail, and other “stuff.” Not to mention it is now the homeschooling hub so a lot of activity goes on around there daily. It is a work in progress to figure out what will work for us.

Here is hoping I can get something figures out that will work for us. You all have a wonderful dry day!

A Productive Day

I took my plan for yesterday and worked it.

Here is my embarrassing buffet. This thing truly is THE hot spot in this house. Everything gets put there, or should I say piled on. And if I don’t stay on top of it daily, then it looks like this in a short amount of time:

buffet 1

buffet 2

buffet 3

So I spent a couple of hours throwing out trash, filing everything that needed to be filed, putting everything back where belonged. And now I have a functional homeschooling storage area. And if needed, I could actually use it as a buffet.

The pink crate contains our files. Those bags contain files for the PTA and a church woman’s group. I am treasurer for both of these organizations. My task for the weekend is to get these two bags organized so at the end of the year I can pass them off to another person. Given our current situation, I really don’t think I will have the time or energy for these activities next year.

The bin on the right contains materials for future use. On top of that bin are dictionaries. The bin in the middle contains puzzles and the books for the girls. The bin on the left contains Patrick’s current in-use materials. On top of the this are bins with office/school supplies.

The dresser to the left of the buffet contains the girls hair stuff, supplies for Shimmer the fish, first aid supplies, and those reusable grocery store bags. Once I get those treasurer bags organized and passed off, then will free up space on the shelf to put those supply bins and dictionaries.

I also put together my menu for the rest of this week:

Friday
Tuna Casserole
Salad
Homemade bread

Saturday
London Broil
Baked Potatoes
Broccoli/Brussel Sprouts

Sunday
Chicken and Rice
Salad
Rolls

I have next week’s menu done too, but I will post that another day.

I looked over my schedule yesterday too. I am not going to make any changes right now. I will be following it for the next couple of weeks to see if any adjustments need to be made. I did not get my master cleaning list done, since the buffet took quite a while to clean and organize.

Today my goal is to get the computer table cleaned off. It is the secondary dumping area and while no where near as bad as the buffet, it desperately needs some work. After that is done I will get the master cleaning list done. The children are home on another snow day, making a total of 9 so far this year. I am not going to push my luck trying to get a lot done today. It has definitely been a long, hard winter around here.

I hope you are having a productive day too.

Getting back to normal

We had weeks of snow, school closings and a major health crisis in the family. My routines and house are trashed. I know what I need to do, the problem is the motivation to do it. I should go to bed earlier, I should get off the computer and clean, I should plan my meals, I should track the homeschooling better. I am having a hard time with these shoulds.

The avoidance of doing anything has helped me get through it all. The computer has became an escape from the reality of my life. It takes energy to clean and plan those meals. Energy is in short supply right now for me.

So what am I going to do about it? Give myself a kick in the rear. When the girls go down for nap today I am attacking the buffet. That one piece of furniture is the keystone to how I feel about my house. It has become piled and cluttered again. By the end of the afternoon it WILL be a functional piece of furniture.

Once the buffet is done, I am going to tackle that meal plan for the rest of the week. We all need to be eating healthier foods. I have been eating horribly over the past month and when I have been home, I have been fixing quick and simple. I figure that is part of the reason for low energy. So I will be focusing on healthier, traditional foods. Once I have that done, I will move onto next week’s meals, continuing with those healthier foods.

After that, I am going to review my schedule and make sure it works for me right now. Things have definitely changed so I need to make sure it is reasonable for the here and now.

Then I am going to get my list together again for the big clean. I had it all planned out and the house should have been completed by now, but you know what they say about the best laid plans.

Finally I am going to make sure I get to bed at a decent hour tonight. One in the morning has been the norm for the month. And with a 7 AM wake up call, plus a visit or two in the night by a little one has made for very little sleep. Another energy drainer for sure.

Now that I have a plan laid out, I am feeling less out of control.

Ready for the Winter Cleaning

Oh the fun! I have worked up the new schedule and this weekend we start the new chore list with the children. I have also developed my master To Do List for the next month. Sometimes I wonder WHY I do things like that! I really hate seeing that the list is 2 pages, 2 columns long. But the satisfaction I get when I cross off each item makes it worth it (I think!).

I do make my To Do List very detailed. I go through each room and make a note of what needs to be done. I take it down “clean out silverware drawer” in the kitchen level. That way when I have 15 minutes I can take a look at what needs to be done and can see I need to wipe down the microwave. Then I clean out and cross it off and there is one more thing off the list.

I didn’t get pictures of the boys room before we started cleaning it. Douglas was reading over my shoulder and took off and started cleaning. I am thinking he did not want to be embarrassed online. I will have to keep that in mind for the future. The threat of posting pictures may keep people in line.

We are waiting for a light coating of snow today. It could have been a lot worse. I friend in North Carolina is expecting 12 inches of snow. So I will not complain. 🙂

I hope you all have a wonderful Saturday and stay warm and dry.

What is a Christian Homemaker?

This has been tossed around on several of my boards. What makes a woman Christian Homemaker? Is it following Proverbs 31? Is it only following the King James Bible? Is it espousing hate of all Catholics?

My take on being a Christian homemaker is a woman needs to follow the Lord with all her heart. After that everything else falls into place. You can have all the household binders, routines and schedules written down, but if you don’t keep your eye on the Lord, they won’t work.

A wonderful resource is a Mother’s Rule of Life. It will help you to get your routines in order to place the Lord first in your life.

Another important thing is being yourself to your family, friends and God. Oh, of course a healthy dose of nagging to get the chores done helps too!

So how would you describe a Christian Homemaker?

Managing It All

How do I manage to do everything that needs to be done around our busy house? You have seen our schedule and the Children’s Chore list. Part of my evening routine is filling out my To Do list for the next day.

This list is a table format that has 3 columns: To Do, To Go and To Call. Each column has 15 lines in it. I figure if the list is totally full that is 45 items to do in a day. More than enough for any one person to accomplish! During the day, as I finish a task, it is crossed off. If life takes over and I cannot finish the list, the undone items roll over to the top of tomorrow’s list.

I print the To Do List on one page. I can easily fold it and put in my calendar or purse so I have it with me while running my errands.

I do some other things I do to make this work for me. I put the phone numbers on the To Call List so I have them. I also jot a quick note about why I am calling. I put the To Go list in the order I am going to travel. Mapping out my day helps with the travel and cuts down on a back tracking. I also attach any shopping lists so everything is all together for the day.

Mom’s To Do List can be seen here. Let me know if you need it in a different format if you want to try it out.
