The other day my children were clamouring for chocolate chip cookies. In the past I would run to the pantry and take out a package of Chips Ahoys. The 15.25 ounce packages says it has 13 servings. I assume that is about 2 cookie per serving. So in reality that package would be gone in one sitting with some of the older children having 4 cookies. I figure there are about 30 cookies in the package.
And here are the ingredients in Chips Ahoy:
ENRICHED FLOUR (WHEAT FLOUR, NIACIN, REDUCED IRON, THIAMINE MONONITRATE {VITAMIN B1} RIBOFLAVIN {VITAMIN B2}, FOLIC ACID)
SEMISWEET CHOCOLATE CHIPS (SUGAR, CHOCOLATE, COCOA BUTTER, DEXTROSE, SOY LECITHIN – AN EMULSIFIER)
SUGAR
SOYBEAN OIL AND/OR PARTIALLY HYDROGENATED COTTONSEED OIL
HIGH FRUCTOSE CORN SYRUP
LEAVENING (BAKING SODA AND/OR AMMONIUM PHOSPHATE)
SALT
WHEY (FROM MILK)
NATURAL AND ARTIFICIAL FLAVOR
CARAMEL COLOR
And the package goes for around $3.00 on sale around here. Not a great bargain.
Recently I have been making chocolate chip cookie dough and keeping it in the refrigerator. Every couple of days I take out a hunk, let it warm up and then bake cookies. Fresh, warm cookies right out of the oven for those that want a snack.
Here are my ingredients:
Flour
Salt
Butter
Sugar
Brown Sugar
Vanilla Extract
Eggs
Chocolate Chips
And my cost for making 100 cookies is under $4.00. A much better deal and I know where the ingredients come from.
So once a week I make the doughs for sugar cookies, chocolate chips cookies, snickerdoodle and peanut butter doughs in the fridge. That way we can have fresh cookies when ever we want.
